The Burke Museum

For Members:

Curated Conversations - On Our Terms: Reflections and Stories. Join the producers of the film for a screening a discussion. Thursday, April 11, 6pm.

For Kids:

Fossil Finders - Dino Environments. Handle fossils and casts, making a fossil rubbing, have fun as a fern in the photobooth, and take home a dino plant guide to find plants around your neighborhood. Included with admission. For kids 3-8 years old. Sunday, April 28, 10am-1pm.

After Hours:

Burke in Bloom. Experience the Burke after hours and behind-the-scenes at this fundraising event to celebrate research, education, creativity, and communities. Friday, May 4, 5pm.

For Everyone:

Dino Lecture ~ Winging It: The Evolutionary Journey of Birds. Learn about how birds became birds and how they adapted to survive the extinction of their ancestors, the dinosaurs. Free event, registration requires (here). Thursday, May 16, 7:30pm. Kane Hall, room 120, on campus.

DinoFest. Learn about fossils, including the latest research from paleontologists, watch fossils being removed from rock, create a clay cast to take home, and more. Sunday, June 2, 10am-5pm. 10am-11am is Member Hour. 11am-5pm for the public. Reserve your timed entry ticket here.

Specialized Events:

Here:Now - Arts Engagement for Adults Living with Dementia. Put on by specially trained museum staff and art teachers, this series includes a six-session class for adults living with dementia to discuss art and get some hands-on experience. Spring I and Spring II are still open. Additionally, there is a virtual discussion for adults with dementia available on select Tuesdays from 1-2pm, check here for more information. On April 9 and May 14, 2:30-4pm, there is an in-person meet up for adults with dementia and alzheimer's at the Memory Cafe. All programs are free, pre-registration is required.

Mindfulness Meditation. The Frye offers free thirty-minute mindfulness meditations on the first and third Wednesday's of the month, 12:30-1pm. Registration not required. They also have pre-recorded sessions available on their YouTube.

Mask-Required Hours. For immunocompromised people and individuals who prefer for other guests and staff to be masked, the Frye offers mask required hours on the first Sunday of the month from 11am-1pm.

Frye Art Museum

For Kids:

Small Frye - Storytelling + Art. Experience your kids's favorite picture books in new ways through movement, drama, and hands-on art-making. Co-presented with the Seattle Children's Theater. For kids 2-5 years old and their caregivers. Wednesday, April 3, and another May 1, both at 10:15am-11:15am. Free, but pre-registration is required.

Small Frye at Town Hall Seattle. Come celebrate the book launch of Your House is Not Just a Home by Idris Goodwin, illustrated by Lorraine Nam, with an interactive storytelling experience and a group hands-on art-making activity. Family Field Trip to the Frye. Bring the whole family for a guided tour and a hands-on art-making activity. Saturday, April 27, 10am-12pm. For ages 6 and up. Event is free but pre-registration is required.

Tours:

Frye-Day Fun. Join gallery guides on Fridays at 1pm-1:45pm as they give tours on current exhibits. Topics vary. Free, no registration required, first-come first-serve.

On Saturdays from March 30-June 8, join gallery guides for a tour and discussion of the pieces in the Frye Salon. 1-1:45pm, first-come first-serve.

On Sundays and select Saturdays until May 5, join gallery guides on a guided tour and discussion of two special exhibits: Jessica Jackson Hutchins: Wrecked and Righteous and Sky Hopinka: Subterranean Ceremonies. 1-1:45pm, first-come first-serve.

Classes:

Figure Drawing at the Frye with Unwrapped Collaborative. Practice your figure drawing by drawing from in-person nude models. 18+. Thursday, April 11, May 9, and June 13, 6-8pm. Registration required, $10, or $8 if you're a student (per class).

Art History Lecture Series: Soft Sculpture. Thursday, April 11, 11am-12pm. Individual tickets range in price from $9 if you're a student to $16 if you're not a member. Additionally, you can purchase a series pass for $75 (student)-$150 (non-member). Lectures available online for series pass holders. The series runs from September 2023-June 2024. On the closing weekend of her exhibit, join artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins and exhibition curator Amanda Donnan in a discussion about Hutchins's work. Saturday, May 4, 3-4:15pm. Massive Curatorial and Collections Members Talk. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the MoPop's new flagship exhibition Massive, exploring questions about pop culture exactly is, and who gets to decide. Saturday, April 20, 2-3pm. Free with membership, registration required.

Special Events:

Star Wars Day. Come celebrate all things Star Wars this May 4th, all day at the museum. There will be a presentation and conversation with various special effects artists, as well as a screening of The Empire Strikes Back, plus many more Star Wars themed activities throughout the museum.

Sensory-Friendly Programs. Come explore the museum in a sensory-friendly environment, the lights and sounds turned down, without the huge crowds. $10 for adults, $9 for youth, +$6 for entry into Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA. Saturday, May 25, 8-10am.

Homeschool Days. Designed for kids 6-14, MoPop offers various classes, from drama classes to ghost hunting and more. Check out the classes offered, including their times and prices, here.

JUOIGGAS! Sámi National Theater. Join the National Nordic Museum and University of Washington’s Department of Scandinavian Studies for a special celebration of Sámi art and culture in Seattle, presented by the Beaivváš Sámi National Theatre. Spectrum Dance Theater presents DIALOGUE. An original performance choreographed by Spectrum's Artistic Director Donald Byrd, in response to Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson's posthumously-released album Home.s. This original performance is inspired by the special exhibition Nordic Utopia? African Americans in the 20th Century, open March 23. May 1-11, 11:30am-12pm.

Naramore Art Show 2024. Art on display from Seattle Public School's middle and high school students. Open every Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm, April 6-May 12. Free to access and open to all.

Chanoyu: Tea Culture of Japan Demonstration. Located at the teahouse on the third floor. Starting in March, this demonstration is held on the second Saturday of every month (April 13), 3-4pm, and the third Saturday of every month (April 20), 2-3pm. Free with admission. (No you don't get to drink the tea.)

Book Signing at the SAM Shop: Preston Singletary. Preston Kochéin Singletary is an internationally recognized glass artist of Tlíngit descent. His new publication Fusion Notes (Minor Matters, 2023) is the third hardcover publication of his work, and the first he has authored. Saturday, April 13, 2-4pm.

Virtual Educators Workshop: Sharing Collective Memories. Focusing on and using the messages of Juane Quick-to-See Smith's work, participants will brainstorm how to integrate techniques such as using found text and mixed media in their classrooms, as well as prompts for fostering student discussions around identity and their communities. Seattle Asian Art Museum

Public tour: Journeys Through Time and Space. Tour of all the galleries in the newly renovated Seattle Asian Art Museum. Free and open to the public. Saturdays and Sundays 1:30-2:30.

Talks:

Saturday University: Buddhist Burial Covers in Late Imperial China. Join Aurelia Campbell, Associate Professor of Asian Art History at Boston University, for a talk about elaborate Buddhist burial shrouds excavated from the graves of high-ranking men and women of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).
